Kassø’s methanol customer base expands into chemicals and road fuels

Reported shipping and chemical-product deliveries now sit alongside an announced OMV supply decision. Each outlet has its own end use and commercial stage.

Kassø has added chemical-product customers after its first shipping-fuel deliveries. In August 2026, co-owner Mitsui reported that supply to LEGO and Novo Nordisk had begun that spring, following the first Maersk marine-fuel shipment in May 2025. The dates mark two different routes to customers for the Danish methanol plant.

The chemical route gives the project a market beyond fuel combustion. A Mitsui project-team interview describes the methanol as feedstock for polyoxymethylene, or POM, used in plastic components. It names LEGO axles and Novo Nordisk medical devices as applications, with the latter’s finished-product use described as planned. The reported milestone is methanol supply into that chain.

European Energy’s project timeline records first raw methanol in March 2025 using carbon dioxide from local biogas. The facility combines that carbon input with hydrogen to make a molecule that can be sold as fuel or enter a materials chain. Its stated capacity is up to 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol a year.

Mitsui’s August release adds a third outlet: a decision to supply RFNBO e-methanol to OMV for land-transport fuel. This is an announced supply decision alongside the reported shipping and chemical deliveries. It extends the customer map while specifying the product category required for that offer. The announcement does not date an actual OMV delivery.
