What connects Germany’s hydrogen backbone to an industrial site

ONTRAS and MITNETZ GAS report completion of the first 400 metres at BMW Leipzig. The local lateral and upstream line follow separate schedules; GASCADE’s commissioned trunk and WAL’s entry reservation illustrate other connection arrangements.

BMW’s factory connection runs on two schedules

BMW Leipzig shows where a national hydrogen route has to become a factory connection. In a joint release dated 30 September 2026, ONTRAS and MITNETZ GAS said roughly 400 metres of pipe had been completed on the works site. The package also includes an approximately 2-kilometre high-pressure lateral, an H2-ready pressure-control and metering station, and an upstream link to ONTRAS. BMW’s stated use is hydrogen for drying in the paint shop.

The release assigns different dates to the local and upstream work. The local connection project is targeted for completion in mid-2027; commissioning of the line in ONTRAS’s H2-Startnetz is planned by the end of 2027. It does not give a date for BMW’s first hydrogen use. Those milestones should remain separate in a project schedule because the site equipment and the network tie-in are different assets.

BMW’s local package forms part of ONTRAS’s planned H2-Startnetz, an approximately 600 km regional system with around 80% converted pipelines. The operator says that system includes the route to BMW’s coupling point. That places the factory works within a named regional programme, with a conversion share distinct from the national approval baseline.

The 2024 approval and 2026 proposal have different horizons

The Federal Network Agency approved Germany’s hydrogen core network on 22 October 2024: 9,040 kilometres, expected investment of €18.9 billion, and key infrastructure intended to enter operation by 2032. The approval comparison table assigns 56% of the route length to converted pipelines. The 56% figure is the route mix in the approved plan, not a measure of network completion.

On 15 June 2026, the regulator announced that it had opened a consultation on the second draft of the Gas and Hydrogen Network Development Plan, submitted on 1 June. The draft proposes 9,241 kilometres of hydrogen network by 2037 and €24.3 billion in hydrogen measures; the regulator said it would examine the draft before confirmation. Those figures describe the draft’s later planning horizon. They should be read alongside the approved 2032 core-network baseline, not as a revised cost for the same approved assets.

The approval record also shows why conversion depends on the existing gas system. Part of JAGAL was still needed for natural-gas transport, so it could not be converted and a new hydrogen line was required instead. The regulator’s 2026 planning explanation similarly notes continuing short-term gas needs for power plants and industry. Reusing pipe is therefore tied to when its previous service can be released.

GASCADE has commissioned a long-distance section

At backbone scale, GASCADE reports that it commissioned the northern Flow East section, approximately 400 kilometres, in December 2025 after an investment decision in October 2024. The converted north-south axis runs between Lubmin and Bobbau. This is a dated commissioning milestone for a named trunk route, giving the approved network a concrete transport asset on that corridor. GASCADE reports pipeline commissioning; the source does not give a hydrogen throughput figure.

This gives project reviewers a commissioning milestone for the Flow East corridor. BMW’s release identifies ONTRAS’s H2-Startnetz as its upstream network; the cited sources does not connect the Leipzig site line to GASCADE’s Flow East section. The trunk and lateral are useful to compare as different connection interfaces, while the named assets and projects remain separate.

WAL has reserved entry capacity for a planned producer

On 19 May 2026, GASCADE announced an agreement reserving entry capacity on its hydrogen core network for WAL. WAL, developed by H2APEX and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, is planning a 100 MW first-phase electrolyser at Lubmin. The agreement secures an entry-capacity reservation for that planned production project.

WAL’s reservation is a producer-side access milestone. It records a commercial arrangement for network entry, while the 100 MW figure describes planned electrolyser capacity. The release gives no booked megawatt quantity or final tariff, so a project model should keep those terms open and track the physical connection and plant commissioning as separate steps.

Three interfaces, three different kinds of progress

These separate projects illustrate three interfaces an industrial developer may need to evaluate: a commissioned trunk, producer-side entry access and a factory lateral with metering. The sources make the interfaces comparable as evidence types; they do not establish a continuous WAL-to-BMW supply chain.

Examples from separate projects: backbone, producer-entry and factory interfaces
InterfaceObserved milestoneWhat it establishes for project review

Producer entryWAL: capacity reservation signed in May 2026; 100 MW first phase plannedEntry access is reserved for a planned producer; plant capacity is a separate project figure

Commercial review follows the asset boundary

The distinction changes what a developer or industrial buyer should check next. On the producer side, the reservation agreement makes entry terms, the physical injection point and the commissioning path relevant commercial questions. On the customer side, BMW’s package shows that a national route still needs a site lateral and metering facility, with local construction and upstream availability scheduled separately. These interfaces affect connection scope, tariff discussions and the sequence for committing the plant to hydrogen use.

The next decision-relevant evidence is specific to each asset: completion of BMW’s local works against the mid-2027 target, commissioning of the ONTRAS line by its end-2027 target, and a later disclosure of first hydrogen use at the paint shop. For WAL, the useful follow-up is the physical entry connection and the plant’s move from its planned 100 MW phase into commissioning. Keeping these dates and statuses separate lets a project team distinguish a network route, a booked entry position and a customer-ready connection when it assesses schedule and commercial exposure.
